Petits bâtiments à vente 462 West 23rd Street #, Chelsea - New York

Artistically designed and thoughtfully renovated, this magnificent 22' wide townhouse is the perfect home for an impressive art collection, vibrant entertaining and quiet living. Located in West Chelsea, this approximately 7,200 square foot Italianate brownstone has been completely re-built from top to bottom with dramatic modernist motifs and classical proportions by Jonathan Marvel of Roger/Marvel Architects, with a kitchen designed by Michelin Star chef Terrance Brennan.Modern features of this historic 1850's home include 20' high ceilings, gorgeous lighting streaming through massive windows stretching over 20' tall, a fast commercial grade elevator, smart lighting, central A/C and heat, smart sound and security systems and luxurious finishes. Site specific art installations by Kiki Smith, Rinus Van de Velde, and Brock Enright make this a true showpiece home and will stay with the property. A mixture of both impressive and intimate spaces throughout 7 floors of this immaculate, move-in ready single family home and gallery make it a wonderfully re-imagined standout in one of Manhattan's legacy townhouse districts.CellarThe lower level of this house is fully finished and contains a central recreation area/gym, numerous closets, a powder room, and utility/mechanical areas. Also located on this level is a fully appointed catering kitchen and laundry room. With the elevator serving this level, it becomes an ideal service area for formal entertaining or catering.Garden FloorThe house is entered at the street/garden level with a vestibule and foyer unfurling into a stunning central stair landing. Here, underneath a massive skylight six stories above, the home's centerpiece is on display: an open staircase adorned by 15 unique aluminum panels from artist Kiki Smith highlighted by sunlight from above. The rear of the garden floor is home to an expansive and voluminous gallery with 20' ceilings and a massive 22' south-facing rear window overlooking peaceful townhouse gardens. Brazilian Rosewood paneling conceals a number of functional spaces on this floor, including three large coat closets, a wet-bar off the open gallery space, the elevator and a discrete and quiet guest bedroom and bathroom suite, screened by greenery in the front garden.Backing up to townhouse gardens on landmarked West 22nd Street, the gorgeously designed south garden is open and flooded with light throughout the day, with partial shade and privacy provided by a 60 foot old growth black locust tree. This large open garden comes equipped with irrigation, lighting and sound, allowing for seamless indoor to outdoor entertaining from the main gallery. Relaxing bird sounds can be heard in the morning and early evening and add the perfect atmosphere to relax at the beginning or end of the day. Second FloorThe second floor consists of a dining or sitting area overlooking the gallery, along with a library and a powder room. The dining area, with its 11' ceilings and glass paneled balustrade, is an intimate space that enjoys the grandeur of lower gallery while keeping the garden in full view. As on all floors, the central landing area is paneled in rich Brazilian Rosewood, which hides away the elevator door and a powder room. At the front of the house is a large library with 13' ceilings, a blackened steel fireplace with adjacent firewood storage, back-lit bookcases, and beautiful paneled cabinetry. The library is ornamented by gorgeous segmental arched floor-to-ceiling triple hung windows, with added privacy from a cast iron balconette on the exterior.Third FloorThe third floor contains two additional public rooms ready for formal or casual entertaining, including a well-appointed kitchen designed by Michelin Star chef Terrance Brennan with Teak cabinetry, an industrial Wolf oven and range and paneled appliances. The kitchen has an open plan with plenty of space for casual dining for 8 or more people. On the south side of the third floor is the elegant living room, with a gracious terrace overlooking the garden and blackened steel wood burning fireplace. There is also a powder room on the third floor.Fourth FloorOn the fourth floor, the house transitions to its private spaces, with two full-width bedroom suites opposite one another, each containing walk-in closets and fully appointed en-suite bathrooms. The southern bedroom has a wood burning fireplace, and the northern bedroom has an additional washer/dryer in its walk-in closet.Fifth FloorThe master bedroom suite utilizes the entire Fifth Floor, with two full bathrooms and a large dressing room. The bedroom itself faces south and contains a blackened steel fireplace, walk-in closet and a full bathroom. Opposite the bedroom is a fully appointed dressing room with additional sky-lit bathroom. The spa-like steam shower also has a site-specific polished concrete reclining bench spanning the length of the shower, and skylights above the shower and dual vanity bring the sun and moon directly into this relaxing retreat.Sixth FloorResting atop this beautiful home is a bright sitting room with a wet bar, floor to ceiling windows and doors on the north and south sides which open onto two large planted terraces. A tremendous skylight brightens this area during the day and night, and roof garden plantings and old growth trees create a lush ambiance whether inside or out.Home Features462 West 23rd Street comes fully appointed with numerous modern systems and features, including multi-zone central air conditioning, integrated audio throughout, a security system with multiple cameras, automated window treatments, and a high speed elevator. In addition to the staircase, additional art commissioned for this home by Brock Enright adorns the walls of the elevator cab, where back-lit etched mirrored glass gives the elevator an infinite, celestial feeling. Another of Enright's two-way mirror creations rests at the bottom of the stair core in the entrance gallery, bringing light to the cellar and creating a unique anchor to the center of the house.HistoryBy the 1850's, Chelsea had blossomed out of the family estate of Clement Clarke Moore, emerging as Manhattan's most genteel and desirable residential neighborhood. 462 West 23rd Street was built in 1857 by Morgan Pindar as part of a row of Anglo-Italianate townhouses characterized by unified brownstone facades, high stoops, segmental arched windows and bracketed cornices. So desirable, this 23rd Street row soon became known as Manhattan's first "Millionaire's Row." In 1929, plans to widen 23rd Street resulted in the removal of the 23rd Street houses' stoops, happening contemporaneously with the fashionable practice of stoop removal and modern townhouse reconfiguration. During the recent restoration of the home, a replica of the original cast-iron balconette was added to the parlor floor as a nod to the home's decorated place in Chelsea's history.
